My Invitation

In room 5 we are making Christmas Invitations for St.Patrick's Christmas Concert. This is my invitation to my older sister Melanie.

My Christmas Card

We are learning about advent. I know that I have learnt this lesson because I know that the four candle on the wreath of Advent means that people have been waiting for 4,000 years for Jesus and now he's here. This is  my Christmas card I have created.

The Prophet Isiah


We are learning to read a story from the prophet Isiah and see what the chapter/verse means. I know that I have learnt this lesson because  know that when God's way is truly on earth their will be a lot of peace and a lot of harmony all around the world. This is a picture I drew. It is a lion, Isiah said that: On that day the wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard should lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together and a little child shall lead them. 

Room 5 Forever



We are learning about Maori Cloaks. I know that I have learnt this lesson because I know that cloaks tell a story about the person who is wearing it and it is made for special people like chiefs.  Room 5 had made a cloak to represent us and our work. We had chose to do our class room because we are the creators of the cloak.

Traditional Maori Musical Instruments

We are learning to discover Maori musical instruments. I know that I have learnt this lesson when I can answer questions about the Maori instrument Putorino and make a Venn diagram of the Putorino and a different instrument. This is my Maori Musical instruments.

  1. Why is the sound of the putorino said to be inspired by the case moth?The case moth is inspired by the Te Kokiri Atane the male voice and Te Tewaiotehine the female voice.  Do you think this is a true story? This story is true. Why do you think that? I think that the story is true because of all the different and unique instruments and about how Shane James had told us about the female and the male voice.   

2. Describe the sounds the putorino can make and how they are produced. The putorino is produced when the male voice is when you put your mouth in and blow, it sounds like  the trumpeting note used to summon or signal something happening. The female voice is when you put half of your  mouth and blow. What do the different sounds represent? The sounds represent the female and the male voice. Use the 'Comparisons' response template to compare the sounds of the putorino with another wind instrument, such as the flute or trumpet.

3. Shane says many putorino have lain dormant in museums for many years, until recently. What does he mean by this? Shane means that the putorino has been laid asleep in museums and that some of their sounds have been recovered and also that they are important to carvers.  Why are there no records of how putorino were made and used? There are no records because they did not have technology like cell phones or recorders or cameras, this would mean that the Maori people used to write things down and people like us now don’t really know about how they used to .

4. There has been a renewed interest in making and playing traditional Māori instruments. Why do you think people have taken a greater interest in recent years? They have taken greater interest because the putorino is a really unique and inspiring to other people like carvers when they are wanting to make other instruments they use the putorino as like an example for other Maori instruments.  Where can they learn more? They can find more by going to museums and looking at traditional and unique and ancient Maori instruments or they can just ask their parents or grandparents, ancestors about the putorino.

5. Most cultures have used musical instruments for centuries. Find out more about taonga puoro, or the traditional instruments of a different culture. The instrument that I chose was from the country Ireland, the harp.


Fact 1: The harp represents a huge sound box carved from a solid block of wood a heavy, curved neck and a deeply in curved fore pillar
Fact 2: The harp was made to bear great tension from the heavy brass strings.

Fact 3:  The Trinity college harp and the Queen Mary’s Harp are the oldest surviving Celtic harps and both date from the 15th or 16th centuries and illustrate the similarity between the Irish and Scottish harps
Fact 4: Harp comes from the word meaning to pluck. Ireland was famous throughout  Europe because of their music playing.
Fact 5: During the 1890's and early 19000’s, some small harps were made in Ireland but they only unsure resembled the ancient Irish harp with the big glorious sound.

Preservation

We are learning to discover customary food preservation. I know that I have learnt this lesson when I can create a presentation which tells my audience how Maori people use drying racks to dry fish and shark. Our question was How do Maori people use drying racks to dry fish and shark? We had to look at our key questions and look at the word we couldn't understand, then we used that keyword to look it up and so we started to skim and scan. When we found our answers to our question, we wrote it down in our own words, when we had done that we had found our answers to our question. This is a power point my group and I had created for Maori's food preservation.

Purgatory

We are learning to create a prayer for people who are undergoing purgatory. I know that I have learnt this lesson when I can create a TRAP prayer (Thanks,Review, Ask,Promise).  This is my prayer that I have written to God for the people undergoing purgatory. Purgatory is a place that God let's you reflect on your bad sins and lets you be your best self.

My Special Sister Melanie

On the 14th of September it was my sister Melanie's 27th birthday. We woke her up and wished her a "Happy Birthday" and she said "Thank You". Then on Sunday we were going to take her to the Happy Days Restaurant but then my uncle rang us and asked if we can have a BBQ for her and we said yes. Facebook For Children Under 13

We are learning to persuade people if we should or should not have Facebook. I know that I have learnt this lesson when I can write a persuasive text about why children under 13 should not have Facebook. Here is my persuasive text of why children under 13 should not have Facebook.

I truly, fiercely, enormously believe that having Facebook is not that very good for children under 13. Having Facebook is bad, having Facebook is awful, having Facebook is fearful.

People could bully you on Facebook. If you just logged on Facebook and you see a lot of people from school saying “ Go kill yourself you look too ugly". You might go and commit suicide. Do you want people to say that on your wall about how ugly you are? They can. Did you know that Facebook members have harassed other Facebook members on Facebook, bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide. Having Facebook is bad, having Facebook is terrible, having Facebook is awful.

People can see all the private stuff you don’t want them to see. If people knew what school you come from then they will try and come and search for you. Would you want people to hunt you down? Facebook is the worst website for children. Children could run away just because they could get hunted down. Did you know that girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying, also only 1 in 10 of victims will inform a parent, or a trusted adult of their abuse, 68% of students agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem. I don’t like Facebook, I don’t want Facebook, I wish Facebook didn't exist.

People who are important to you can block you. If you needed to contact someone urgently and you search for their name you might find out that they blocked you for no reason. Do you want people to block you for no reason? They can. Did you know 81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person, also about 75% have visited a website bashing another student, another fact is that Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online, Also 70% of students have report seeing frequent bullying online,    Blocking people is the worst thing. Blocking makes us bad, blocking makes us sad, blocking makes us mad.

This is why I believe that having Facebook is a bad idea. If you do have Facebook people could see private stuff, block you, and they could even be cyber bullying on your page. Do you want that to happen?  Never have Facebook, don’t have Facebook, stop having Facebook

Fletcher's Family Food Factory

WALT: Persuade people to build/ not build the factory on our courts. I know I have learnt this lesson when I have my structure such as Thesis, 3 Main reasons with examples to back my reasons up, and my conclusion to end my argument. Here is my persuasive text to Fletcher's Family Food Factory: 

I believe that we should not build a factory in this school. Would you want them to take half of your school? Building a factory is bad, building  factory is uncool, building a factory makes us sad.

There will be no courts for the big kids to have basketball training and also for the kids to have to fun. Would you want the big and little kids to be bored every single day? This is the worst thing that could happen to our school. The children will not be able to play their games on the court because its gone and if we don't get any fitness we are not treating the body that God gave, because God created us to be fit and healthy. We have to respect the body of God.

If we have a factory there will be a fire. There will be a horrible fire caused by the factory. If the workers leave something hot on the whole night long, there will be no school. It gets worse Rooms 5, 7 and 8's chrome books will be gone forever. Would you want that to happen? Fires are awful, fires are dangerous, fires are fearful.

The Bishop of our school will be furious because they are taking half of his land away. He will go to the council and argue with the council about them taking away his land away. Would you want the Bishop to complain? He will complain about his land being taken. He will be distracted by the noise when he is reading something so he could teach other people about it. The Bishop will be sad, the bishop will be fierce, the Bishop will be worries

I believe that this is why we should not build a factory. If they build the factory there will be no courts for people to have fun on them. There will also be a serious fire, would you want that to happen? There will also be an argument with the Bishop and the council.

Bullying has to Stop

On Monday 26th August for R.E room 5 talked about bullying. We talked about when was the time we were bullied and how it made me feel.Mrs Richardson told us about the Ancient American Indians and how they used a talking stick and the person that had the stick is the only one talking. So we tried it out then we wrote about when we were bullied on our read books. Here is a picture of a girl being bullied. Together we can make bullying STOP!!!

My Healthy Pyramid

We are learning to treat God's body with respect by being fit and healthy. I know I have learnt this lesson when I can create a food pyramid that has the carbohydrates, meat and protein, whole grain, fat treats, veges,fruits and dairy products. In this picture it shows what foods are good for your body and what foods are bad for your body. In the small bit of the pyramid it has all the fat treats such as pancakes, muffins and hot chips, on the 4 halved squares it has the dairy products like milk and butter which is on the left top bit then we have the meat and protein which has stuff like balognia which is next to the dairy products. On the bottom 2 squares we have the veges such as lettuce and cabbage then oranges and bananas on the fruit side. On the bottom part of the pyramid it has all the bread, rice, and pasta which is whole grain like cereal or corn.

New Term With New Challenges


We are learning to write goals to help us measure our learning. I have learned this lesson when I know that my goals are measurable and specific. These are paragraphs of my goals about Writing, Reading and Maths.


My goal for writing is to use 9 ambitious vocabulary words in each of my paragraphs and also try to make my work exciting and not to rush. This is important because I want the reader to be interested of what I am writing and let them read more and more of my story. The steps I will take to achieve my goal will be is to read my work and check for spelling mistakes, check with a buddy and ask my buddy what his/her opinion is,  and what I can change in my writing then check with my teacher.













My goal for Reading  is to read a type of text and question myself about what the story was about. This is important because if I was told to read a story to some children I would be embarrassed because I can’t read. The steps I will take to achieve my goal will be to read any type of story with a sibling at home and let him/her ask me some questions about the story.


My goal for Maths is to learn my 17 , 18 times tables and also to answer faster when I am doing a basic facts test.  This is important because I want to be faster than 49 seconds in my basic facts and get a great time and also to be moved into the highest group like the ovals. The steps I will take to achieve my goal will be to think of  some faster ways I can solve the equation instead of using my fingers,  to ask a sibling at home to ask me hard times tables that I can solve using faster strategies.

Water Cycle


We are learning to write a report about what happens in the water cycle. I have learned this lesson when I write what happens in the Water Cycle. This is the first topic of what happens in the water cycle, rain.

Precipitation is when the clouds get full of water and falls onto the ground. It can either rain, snow, hail or sleet .This fills up all our lakes, oceans, streams on the surface of the earth. Sleet is like a snowflake but it is also like hail so it’s half snow/hail a sleet can even be a type of rain .Hail is when the clouds get frozen and falls down onto the grounds like rain . Snow is when the temperature gets really cold it freezes up in the clouds and starts to fall as snowflakes .

This is a picture of my little niece Melanie in her pink  birthday dress. She was very happy that everybody was there so celebrate her very first birthday. On her birthday my two cousin and I did a Samoan dance for her. Now that my little niece is 1 she can finally walk by herself. She is a smart little niece.

Tippy Tappy

We are learning to  discover what we can do to help save water when washing our hands. I have learned this lesson when I can tell other people what a tippy tap is and why we created one. This is a picture of the tippy tap that room 5 created with the help of our teacher. I  know that I have learned this lesson because I know the special graces of anointing of the sick like care, forgiveness and strength. My Fantastic paragraph about Chromebooks


We are learning to how to write a report using paragraphs. This is my paragraph about my Chromebook. I know that I have learned this lesson when I check my paragraph using the Marking my paragraph document, read it out loud, check with a buddy and check with Mrs Richardson.

In Room 5 we use Chromebooks instead of using our books. Ever since Room 5 has had their Chromebooks everything has changed for us. Every Thursday Room 5 has a really special guest in our class and her name is Mrs. Grant  she is the #1 person that teaches us what we can learn on our Chromebooks she can even teach our teacher new things too. One of the things she showed us was a website that is called We Video, It is a website that you can create new videos and songs . Did you know we have our own blogs to post our own learning? Room 5 learned some shortcuts like Ctrl-x is to cut instead of backspacing it and she even showed us how to take snapshots. Chromebooks are fun.

Creation Time - Synonym Wheel

We are learning to create a synonym wheel using our boring word and change it into an exciting word. I know that I can change my boring words into exciting words when I use ancient and elderly instead of "old" This is my Synonym wheel.

Prayer of Thanks


We are learning write a prayer of healing for the people in the Anointing of the sick. The sacraments for healing are Penance and Anointing of the sick. I know that I am ready to share my prayer when I use the TRAP word (Thank You, Reflect, Ask, and promised to change), used Ambitious Vocabulary, checked with a buddy and showed Mrs Richardson. This is my prayer of healing.

Thank you for helping Nelson Mandela. I pray that you may be with him at all times, please bless him because he has done many great things in South Africa and promise that when he falls asleep he may come up peacefully up to you. Please care for his family because they are having a hard time without their Father, Brother or Uncle. Please heal his body so he can get out of hospital and be with his family again.
I also ask for your forgiveness that I am truly sorry for sometimes being a bad person. Please help me to be a considerate person to other people and also let me walk in the right path.

I am learning to type as fast a I can and beat Mrs Richardson's score of 48 words per minute. This is my score of 43. I can improve on typing faster and beat  Mrs Richardson's score!.

The first thing Room 5 did was get into groups then our teacher Mrs Richardson gave each group a scripture and we had to read it and explain what it was about. The very next day we went on a document that  Mrs Richardson created and made a copy to save on our R.E folder. Then when we were done we we had to create a picture of one of the scriptures between Mark and Luke I chose Mark and this is my Picture of the Paralyzed man Before and After.

Have you ever heard of that website "Ten fast finger"? It is this typing website where you have to type really fast for 1 minute. In our class i'm trying to beat Mrs Richardson's score 48 and here is a snapshot of my achievement on ten fast fingers.

Fun Time With Mrs.Grant

On Thursday 23rd May the whole of Room 5 was so excited to see Mrs.Grant, even me. Room 5 had prayer and then we were ready to do Cyber Smart. We Were doing something special today we were looking at another website to do with filming it was called We Video I was really excited but not that excited because when I started I got really stuck so I wasn't that really good at using We Video. But with more practice I will get better.... I hope!





Inspirational Super Mum

Room 5 student's have been writing about Mothers Day and each of us made a mind map of why we all love our Mum. Then we wrote a paragraph using only one main idea. This is my Paragraph about why my Mum is a really fun mum.


My Mum is a fun mum because she takes my little sister and I out to go shopping and when I find something gorgeously amazing  I tell her that I really love it, she jokes around and my sister and I start laughing, she sometimes asks us to be quiet because we're too noisy. My mum is a funny hilarious  joker. I remember one time my sister told me to go and wash the dishes and I said no so they started to grab me by the legs and dragged me into the kitchen, I was laughing so much because the floor was cold and it was tickling my back. My Mum told my sister to stop or else she will do the same to her and I was laughing my head off. Then I got up and ran to the living room.

Mad about Art

In Room 5 for Art we are learning how to shade from light to dark using 6B art pencils. First Mrs Richardson showed us a video of how to shade and how to crosshatch. After the video we got out our 1A5 books and Mrs Richardson handed out the 6B pencils and showed us how to shade and crosshatch. Here is my crosshatching I started out with one line and talked to a partner of what I did well and what I can improve on. Here is my work.

Jesus is the Light of the World

In room 5 for R.E we are learning about baptism. Mrs Richardson showed us a power point of baptism, then we had a discussion of what all the symbols meant and how they are used in the baptism of a child, then we went on a document Mrs Richardson created and we chose our symbol of baptism. We then went onto Sumo Paint and created our own symbol. This is my picture of the candle used in baptism.

Germination,Germination,Germination


The Germination of a plant

We are learning about Germination.The word germination means the process or the beginning of a plant.The lifespan of a plant starts with a seed coat that breaks into a radicle(first root) and that radicle goes down to find food and water.Then the first shoot known as the plumule goes up to get the sunlights warmth/light.Then leaves and roots start to grow.
