Two of a Kind

Learning Intention: Identify Ethos.Pathos and Logos in our reading.

Persuasive Reading Analysis: Video: Two of a Kind - Hey, Little Ant

Persuasive strategy
Yes / No
How the author used it?
Claim – States the main
point or stance
Yes
This clip begins with a single view or perspective meaning that from the boys point of view the ant is nothing to him, and if he hurts it nothing will change the world. From the ants point of view he feels very threatened by the way the boy is explaining to  him how he's going to die.
Big Names –  Mentions experts and
important people to support the argument
No

Logos – Uses logic, numbers, or
facts to support the argument
Yes
The ant provides a number of facts about why he should not be squished. The boy presents as to why he should squish the ant. e.g gather food to feed their young or their whole colony.
Pathos – Appeals to the audience’s emotions
Yes
The ant is being treated like nobody, this leads to bullying. Although the ant can fight back even though he's tinier than the boy. These actions make me feel proud for the ant because even though the boy is bigger than him the ant is still acting more mature than him.
Ethos – Tries to build trust and
credibility
Yes
Both the boy and the ant respond to the views of each other to make them think about the situation from their perspective.
Kairos – Builds a sense of urgency
for the cause
Yes
Because at any point the boy could put down his foot and squish the ant.
Research – Uses studies and
information to make the
argument seem more convincing;
this can be in the form of words,
graphs, tables, or illustrations
No

Caging Animals ... Good? or Bad?

In Room 8 we have been focusing on Analyzing our reading. We have used the three Persuasive Appeals also known as Ethos, Pathos and Logos. The Kahikatea Reading group focused on the Persuasive writing "Caging Animals"

Persuasive strategy
Yes / No
How the author used it?
Claim – States the main
point or stance
Yes
The author states that animals should not be caged for children’s entertainment!
Big Names –  Mentions experts and
important people to support the argument
Yes
Willie B was mentioned as one of the famous animals  of Atlanta Zoo. The author writes that Willie B has never had a chance to explore or hunt because all he does is sit in a cage looking at people watching him. This links to the use of pathos as it makes the reader empathise with the situation that the gorrilla Willie is in.
Logos – Uses logic, numbers, or
facts to support the argument
Yes
It says that a lot of animals have been evacuated from their natural habitat and taken away to a different habitat that doesn’t have the right temperature the natural environment of that animal.
Pathos – Appeals to the audience’s emotions
Yes
Other than empathy the  emotions the reader could feel could include sadness and depression because animals don’t get to live like we do, on the other  hand I feel that I disagree about how the writer feels about letting animal go free because if animals were let out to go and explore they could go into other people’s house and invade their privacy or bust down their house and this could lead to injury and death!
Ethos – Tries to build trust and
credibility
No

Kairos – Builds a sense of urgency
for the cause
Yes
The writer uses a Polar Bear as a good example. Polar Bears are not used to living in places like Atlanta where the temperature is very high and it gets really hot, their natural habitat is quite different, in fact the opposite. Their temperatures of the North Pole are much lower than they are provided  with in their man made habitat!
Research – Uses studies and
information to make the
argument seem more convincing;
this can be in the form of words,
graphs, tables, or illustrations
Yes
The author did a lot of research from Willie B and where he lives and what he does all day and compares the natural habitat of Polar Bears highlighting the difference in temperature between this and that of Atlanta Zoo.

Fast and Furious 7

Friday 17th April all my girl-related cousins went out for a “girls night out” at Sylvia Park. We were going to watch the greatest movie of all time ... Fast and Furious 7.

We went to the counter to pay for our tickets, we were put into cinema 2 but had to wait for a few minutes as they were getting the cinema ready. We all got to go into the arcade room and play some games,
“Cinema 2, all people waiting to go into cinema 2?”
We all got up and tried to fight our way through to see who could get into the cinema first. We were all walking inside and it was just full of darkness. We sat in our chairs and we were all on our phones when they dimmed the lights and the ads came up. We were so excited to finally watch the movie that we just had to take videos and photos of that.

The whole cinema was full of people talking and shouting way too much when finally everybody was being shooshed by something saying
“Please put your feet off the chairs, turn all cellphones off and remember to not throw your popcorn onto the floor, enjoy the movie”
I could just feel everybody’s excitement ( trust me you’ll know what I mean by that). It started out perfectly until the most horrifying, yet amazing part of the movie was when Dominic ( Vin Diesel) and Brian ( Paul Walker) drove a car on the highest level of 3 hotels (in a row).

The movie was going great but I couldn’t get to watch the whole because I was too busy going out of the cinema to get more drinks and popcorn from my cousins. Everytime I go back into the cinema I always have to ask them “What happened”. I always get so annoyed when they tell me to “shosh”, so the only thing I did was sit back and got to sleep but it was too hard cause I couldn’t but open up my eyes to see the goodness. The last part made everybody in the cinema cry, the tribute song called “See you Again” that was being sung by two famous American singers Charlie Puth and Whiz Khalifa. After the song had finished sung the screen was all white with the writing “ For Paul.

The movie gave everybody an emotional, exciting, Happy, Interesting, Adventuring feeling. Everybody came out of the cinema wiping their tears and humming the song. I could also hear people saying “I hope they make a Fast and Furious 8”, my cousins were thinking the same thing.

After we let the movies we drove to burger king and we all got a whopper jnr combo with Frozen Cokes. What a great way to end the holidays.

Marine Education and Recreation Center

Room 8 is leaving for camp today. We each have written an individual biography about Merc, how it started, who started it, what's it's purpose and what activities do they offer. I have written a Merc Biography.

Merc
Marine Education and Recreation Center, also known as Merc is a camp facility that is located at Long Bay Regional Park.

Merc offers families and schools a variety of activities that are land based and water based. Land based activities such as the “Giant's Ladder” helps children to be able to communicate with each other better and work as a team better. Water based activities such as “Raft Building” gives children the opportunity to communicate, share their ideas and their constructing skills. The finishing touch for the raft will either tell the instructors that they either worked together or weren’t included.

Holiday Programmes do happen at Merc. They have different types of activities for 7 - 13 year olds and 14 - 16 year olds. The holiday programme is led by Merc’s qualified team of instructors. The 7 - 13 year old activities include Abseiling, Archery, Body Boarding, Giants Ladder, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Outdoor Survival and many more. The 14 - 16 year old activities include Bush Walk, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Paddle boarding, River Crossing, Reef Swimming etc. These activities do cost and have times, 7-13 yrs cost $35 per child, 14-16 yrs cost $40 per child. They start at 9am and finish at 4pm.

Merc allows Day visits from schools or families. These Day visits are open from 9am - 4pm and only allows you to participate in 3 activities per day. Residential stays offers accommodation including bunk beds and catering food. The residential camps will give you different types of activities to challenge the children into becoming a confident person and a great leader. At Merc the children going in for residential stays or day visits must show attitudes and actions towards the leaders at Merc. These values are known as respect, leadership, confidence, peace, patience, Kindness, encouragement, and self-control not only to the leaders but to their peers.

Statistical Investigation

On Wednesday 1st July Room 8 will be leaving for camp at the Marine Education and Recreation Center also known as "MERC" Long Bay . We have been talking about camp and reading pages from a "Figure It Out" book called "At Camp". The purpose for this book is that children from Te Kura School are leaving for camp but haven't found the perfect place, these places were Marama Island, Lake Waihonu and Mt Albury, the children have put together ideas on how they can make a fair decision on which camp to go to. we all worked in partners and recorded an individual graph on which camps they should go to. This was the graph I made.
